Last week, Hecker Fink LLP and the Howard University School of Law Civil Rights Clinic filed an amicus brief in the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals on behalf of the United Mexican States in support of the Plaintiffs-Appellees in United States of America et al. v. State of Oklahoma et al.

The brief, which can be read in full here, argues that the Western District of Oklahoma District Court correctly entered a preliminary injunction against the enforcement of a recently enacted law in Oklahoma, H.B. 4156, which unlawfully intrudes upon federal immigration power. The brief explains that H.B. 4156 would harm diplomatic relations between Mexico and the United States in four significant ways, including (1) causing the mistreatment of Mexican nationals and their relatives in Oklahoma; (2) frustrating efforts for effective management of the border between Mexico and the United States; (3) hindering trade and tourism between Mexico and the United States; and (4) preventing the United States from speaking with one voice in international affairs.

The Hecker Fink team includes Joshua Matz and Christopher Morel. The Howard Civil Rights Clinic team included student attorneys Ahkirah Reid, Obrian M. Rosario, and Simeon Spencer, as well as instructors Donya Khadem and Amit Jain.

Hecker Fink is proud to continue its partnership with the Howard Civil Rights Clinic. Carmen Iguina González, Of Counsel at Hecker Fink, and Amit Jain, Senior Associate at Hecker Fink, currently serve as the Co-Directors of the Clinic. Donya Khadem, a former Associate at Hecker Fink, serves as a Supervising Attorney.
